Welcome back to 3 Things! Today we’ve got a conversation with Simon Sinek – an optimist, a New York Times bestselling author and the speaker behind the third-most-watched TED Talk of ALL TIME – “How great leaders inspire action,” where he popularized the concept of “Starting with your WHY.”

Simon has advised leaders and organizations in almost every industry, from finance to fashion and even the US military. In this episode, Simon unpacks his belief that business can be a scaling mechanism to create more meaning in our lives, the critical value of trust in leadership, and much more.

This is 3 Things.

3 Things I Learned

1) The military culture of command is less about control, and more about trust. That trust is what ultimately leads people into battle and into many difficult situations.

2) The main purpose of a business is to provide a scaled platform for individuals to hone their skills. Not just their technical skills, but the soft skills that permeate to everything in life.

3) Practice “behind” and “ahead” days. Not just in how we raise our kids, but perhaps in how we think of ourselves every day, and our desire to compete against our version of yesterday.
