RV Expert Take: “How to Keep Work Stress from Taking Over Your Life”

We believe in “running up escalators” ― capitalizing on momentum by acting deliberately and urgently in everything we do. But we also believe in winning the right way ― which means finding a healthy balance between maintaining urgency/tension at work, and taking care of your physical and emotional health. If you like to run up escalators (No? Just us?), you might feel a little winded from time to time — and that’s perfectly normal

Here’s what our team at Healthline has to say about managing work-related stress:

“Work-related stress can get the best of us all. Emails, Slack messages, phones ringing off the hook, your co-worker dropping by for an impromptu meeting — it’s enough to make anyone frazzled.

Feeling some tension is normal, especially if you’re facing a looming deadline or challenging assignment. But when work stress becomes chronic, it can end up affecting both your physical and emotional well-being.

Experiencing work strain is unavoidable — even if you love what you do — but there are steps you can take to keep job stress to a minimum.”

Here are some of the tips Healthline experts suggest for managing work-related stress:

  • Be aware of how it affects you. According to Heathline, “Long-term exposure to unmanaged stress can take a toll on your body and mental health, and recent research suggests a potential link between work-related burnout and depression and anxiety.” If you think you’re experiencing stress, take note of how you feel ― stress often leaves us feeling tired, but it can also lead to headaches, insomnia, changes in appetite, and more.
  • Re-evaluate negative thoughts. “When you’ve experienced worry and chronic stress for an extended period of time, your mind may tend to jump to conclusions and read into every situation with a negative lens.” To train your mind out of this habit, try increasing your awareness of negative thoughts, and re-evaluate them to keep unnecessary stress to a minimum.
  • Rely on a strong support network. Friends and family can help us manage stressful times by offering their support, whether by helping tackle time-consuming tasks, like picking up a child from school, or by simply offering a listening ear.
  • Learn relaxation techniques.  Try starting each day by taking a few minutes to focus on being present. A short walk or simple activity each morning can help you slow down and alleviate stressful thoughts.
